Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitri Peskov claim that presidential elections without Călin Georgescu are illegitimate is unacceptable, but in line with the Russian Federation’s systematic efforts to manipulate and interfere in democratic processes in Romania, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) says in a press release.
“Russia has not had free elections for almost 20 years. An aggressor state cannot give lessons in democracy. The opposition in Russia has no access to legal institutions and trials. Opponents are executed a few meters from the Kremlin,” MAE added.
The press release noted that Romania has already responded directly to foreign interference by sending home those who were in contact with a paramilitary group (of Nazi origin) linked to a former presidential candidate who tried to overthrow the democratic constitutional order in Romania.
Romanian Constitutional Court rejected Călin Georgescu’s appeal against the decision to invalidate his candidacy in the presidential elections. Thus, the pro-Russian, anti-EU candidate, loses his last chance for appeal.
